Tight Hips from Sitting: Why It Happens and What Helps
If standing up after a long meeting feels like unfolding, your hips have adapted to sitting. The front of the hip stays shortened for hours, and the glutes that should support you barely work. The good news: hips respond quickly to regular movement.

Why sitting tightens your hips
- Shortened hip flexors. Sitting keeps the hip bent for hours; the muscles at the front adapt to that length.
- Inactive glutes. The muscles that extend and stabilise the hip get very little work when you sit.
- Seat too low. When the knees sit higher than the hips, the hip angle gets even tighter.
- Little variety. Hips like big, varied movements – an office day offers almost none.
3 things you can change today
- Raise your seat slightly so your hips are level with or a little above your knees.
- Half-kneeling hip flexor stretch: one knee down, squeeze the glute on that side, shift gently forward. 2 × 30 seconds per side.
- 10 glute bridges morning or evening – slow, with a short pause at the top.
A simple daily plan
Get up every 30–45 minutes (the break timer helps), do a 10-minute hip routine once a day and add a daily walk. If your lower back is involved too, look at lower back pain from sitting.
When to get it checked
Please see a doctor or physiotherapist if the hip pain followed a fall, if you limp, if pain is felt deep in the groin and keeps getting worse, if it wakes you at night, or if it comes with fever or swelling.
Your next step
- Hip Routine – a complete daily routine for hip tension and mobility.
- Morning Mobility Routine – if you feel stiff first thing in the morning.
- Helpful at home: mini bands for glute bridges, a yoga strap for controlled hip stretches and a cushioned mat for the half-kneeling stretch – or the Glutes & Hips Kit on the kits page.
- Not ready to buy anything? Start with the free 7-Minute Desk Reset or use the Pain Check.
