Home Gym on a Budget: The Smart Order to Buy Equipment

A good home gym is not built in one purchase. Buy in three steps – mat and bands first, one weight second, a pull-up bar or more weights only when you train regularly. That way nothing ends up under the bed.

Step 1: the foundation

A mat and bands cover mobility, core, glutes and a surprising amount of strength work. This is all most desk workers need for the first two months.

Everything in this step is in equipment from under €30.

Step 2: one weight

After 6–8 weeks of regular training, add one weight. For full-body training in a small flat, a fillable kettlebell is the most flexible; for upper-body muscle, a pair of dumbbells. See kettlebell or dumbbells.

Step 3: expand what you actually use

What beginners buy too early

  • Big machines before a routine exists – the most common home gym regret
  • Heavy dumbbell sets when you'd mainly need light weights for shoulders and posture
  • Gadgets (massage guns, posture correctors) instead of training basics

A plan makes the difference

Equipment without a plan gathers dust. With any equipment, a training guide is automatically 50 % off – for example Build Muscle at Home (dumbbells and bands, 8 weeks). Or start with a ready-made kit. More: home gym essentials · home gym in a small flat.
