Pull-up bar options for a home gym

Pull-Up Bar for Home: Doorway, Wall or Ceiling?

A doorway bar is the cheapest way to start. A wall or ceiling bar is the better long-term choice: more stable, more grip options and no damage to door frames – provided your wall can take the load.

The three types

Type Pros Cons
Doorway bar (clamped or hooked) No drilling, cheap, removable Can mark the frame, limited grips, not every frame fits
Wall mount Very stable, room for knees, often several grips Needs a solid wall and drilling
Ceiling mount Free hang, ideal for rings or bands Needs a solid ceiling and enough ceiling height

Check before you drill

  • Wall material: concrete and solid brick are fine with the right anchors. Plasterboard, aerated concrete or hollow walls need special fixings or are not suitable at all – ask a professional if unsure.
  • Load: a pull-up creates more than body weight when you swing or kip. Choose a bar rated well above your weight.
  • Height: you should hang with straight arms without your feet touching the floor, and still have 20–30 cm to the ceiling for your head.
  • If you rent, check with your landlord before drilling into load-bearing walls.

Why pull-ups suit desk workers

Hanging and pulling work exactly the muscles that sitting neglects: the upper back, the lats and the grip. Even 3 × 20–30 seconds of dead hang a day gently decompresses the shoulders after a day at the screen.

Can't do a pull-up yet? 4-week plan

  • Week 1–2: dead hang 3 × 20 s, scapula pull-ups 3 × 8, band rows 3 × 12
  • Week 3: negative pull-ups (jump up, lower in 4–5 s) 3 × 3
  • Week 4: band-assisted pull-ups 3 × 5, then test a strict pull-up

A long loop band over the bar under your feet or knees takes off part of your body weight. The detailed 6-week version: your first pull-up with a band.
