Leg Cramps at Night: Causes and What Really Helps

You are fast asleep – and suddenly your calf turns rock hard. Night-time leg cramps are very common, especially in people who sit a lot, train hard or are over 50. Usually they are harmless, but very unpleasant.

What to do during a cramp

  • Stretch the calf: pull your toes towards you with a straight knee, or stand up and put weight on the foot.
  • Massage the muscle gently.
  • Warmth afterwards relaxes the muscle – a warm shower or heat pad.

Common causes

  • Tight, tired calves – lots of sitting, standing or unusual training.
  • Pointed feet in bed – heavy blankets push the toes down.
  • Too little fluid, especially after sweating.
  • Certain medications (e.g. some diuretics) – ask your doctor or pharmacist.

The role of magnesium is often overestimated: studies show only a small or no effect for most people. It may help in some cases – trying it is usually harmless, but it is not a cure-all.

How to prevent night cramps

  • Stretch the calves before bed: 3 × 30 seconds per side at the wall – one round with a straight knee, one slightly bent.
  • Move during the day – walk, take short breaks from sitting. See how often to get up from your desk.
  • Loosen the blanket at the foot end so your feet are not pushed into a pointed position.
  • Drink enough over the day – see how much water per day.
  • Foam roll the calves after training – how to use a foam roller.

When to see a doctor

Please get checked if cramps happen very often, disturb your sleep regularly, come with swelling, redness, warmth or muscle weakness, if one leg is noticeably swollen, or if they started with a new medication. This article does not replace a diagnosis.

FAQ

Does a banana help against cramps?

It does no harm, but there is little evidence that it prevents night cramps.

Why do I get cramps after training?

Mostly muscle fatigue – especially after unusual or long sessions. Increase training gradually and stretch the calves afterwards.
