Home Gym Essentials: What You Actually Need (and What You Don't)
Share
A home gym doesn't need to fill a room. The right few pieces let you train your whole body properly; the wrong ones end up as clothes hangers.
Here is what to get, in which order, depending on your space and goals.

Stage 1: The starter kit
- Resistance bands in several strengths. Cheap, small, full-body training and great for warm-ups and posture work. Mini bands are the easiest way to train glutes and hips. See the resistance band workout and mini band exercises.
- A good mat. For floor exercises, stretching and mobility. Which thickness you need: yoga mat thickness guide.
- A foam roller. Two minutes before training or in the evening. How to use it: foam roller routine.
With bands and body weight alone you can already train everything. See what bodyweight training can do.
Stage 2: One kettlebell or heavier dumbbells
Once body weight and bands get easy, add load. A single kettlebell covers swings, squats, rows, presses and carries – see kettlebell exercises for beginners. A fillable kettlebell grows with you. Dumbbells in a few weights are the alternative. See the full-body dumbbell workout.
Stage 3: A pulling station
The one movement bands and dumbbells can't fully replace is the pull-up. A wall-mounted pull-up bar or a power tower adds pull-ups and hanging knee raises.
Stage 4: Extras for more variety
- Weight vest: makes push-ups, squats, lunges and walks harder.
- Bench: more pressing and rowing options.
- Cardio machine: useful if you can't or don't want to walk or run outside. See treadmill vs exercise bike.
What you can skip
- Ab gadgets and vibration plates
- Fixed dumbbell sets in many weights if space is tight (adjustable is more efficient)
- Big all-in-one machines before you know you'll train consistently at home
Buy the plan before the equipment
Equipment without a plan rarely gets used. Decide how many days you'll train and what you'll do, then buy what that plan needs. The Desk Recovery Kits put equipment and the matching routine together – with any equipment, a training guide is automatically 50 % off.
Equipment: mini band set · resistance band set · yoga mat (made in Germany) · foam roller · fillable kettlebell 1–25 kg · dumbbell set with rack (1–3 kg) · weight vest · all home gym equipment
Plans: Build Muscle at Home (dumbbells and bands) · Train Anywhere (bodyweight) · find your plan in 30 seconds
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for setup and maximum load. If you have a medical condition, check with a doctor before starting a new programme.
