Lateral raises build wider shoulders. But most people lift too heavy, swing the weight and end up training their traps instead.

The side delt is a small muscle working on a long lever. If you need momentum to get the dumbbells up, they are too heavy. Drop the weight, slow down, and you will feel the side of your shoulder burn within a few reps.
Other common mistakes
Shrugging the weight up
If your shoulders rise towards your ears, the traps take over. Think "push the dumbbells out to the walls", not up to the ceiling.
Lifting too high
Raising far above shoulder height adds little for the side delts and more for the traps. Stop around shoulder height.
Dropping the weight
Lower in 2 to 3 seconds. The lowering part is half the work.
The form that works
- Slight forward lean, soft elbows
- Lead with the elbows, hands slightly below them
- Raise to shoulder height, out to the sides (slightly in front of your body)
- Controlled 2 to 3 seconds down
- 12 to 20 reps per set
How often?
Side delts recover quickly. 2 to 3 sessions per week with 3 to 4 sets each works well for most people. Cable lateral raises are a great variation because the tension stays constant.
