Dumbbell Exercises for Beginners: Which Weight and 6 Moves for Home

Workouts for Busy Parents: 3 × 30 Minutes a Week at Home

With kids, the perfect plan rarely survives the week. A good one fits into nap time or after bedtime – three 30-minute sessions at home, plus a 10-minute version for days when nothing goes to plan.

Want 8 weeks planned? The 8-Week Dumbbell Home Gym programme runs with a pair of dumbbells in the living room – no gym trips needed.

The 30-minute session (3 times a week)

As a circuit: do each exercise once, rest 1 minute after the round, 3–4 rounds.

  1. Goblet squat – 12
  2. Push-up (incline if needed) – 8–12
  3. One-arm dumbbell row – 10 per side
  4. Romanian deadlift – 12
  5. Glute bridge – 15
  6. Plank – 30 s

The 10-minute version for chaotic days

Squat, push-up, row – as many clean rounds as fit in 10 minutes. It counts. Missing a full session is fine; quitting the habit isn't.

Tips that actually work with kids

  • Same slot, different days: e.g. after bedtime on Mon, Wed, Fri.
  • Equipment stays out: dumbbells next to the sofa get used.
  • Kids can join: they count reps, do bridges with you or walk with you.
  • Walks with the pram count as daily movement.

Train this at home

Adjustable dumbbells, a pull-up bar and a set of bands cover most of what a gym offers.
