Mouse-related shoulder tension at a desk

Shoulder Pain From Using a Mouse: Causes, Desk Fixes and 4 Exercises

If only your mouse-side shoulder aches, the cause is usually not the shoulder joint but its position: arm held out to the side and forward for hours, shoulder slightly lifted. Fix the position first, then strengthen the muscles around the shoulder blade.

Why the mouse shoulder hurts

  • Mouse too far away. A wide keyboard pushes the mouse to the right, the arm reaches out and the shoulder holds it there all day.
  • Shoulder lifted. Desk too high or chair too low – the upper trapezius works constantly.
  • No support. Without the forearm resting, the shoulder carries the arm's weight.
  • Weak upper back. The muscles that hold the shoulder blade in place tire quickly, the neck and shoulder take over.

3 changes for today

  1. Bring the mouse close – right next to the keyboard, elbow close to the body at about 90 degrees. A compact keyboard without number pad helps a lot.
  2. Rest the forearm on the desk or an armrest at desk height.
  3. Switch sides now and then – a second mouse on the left for scrolling and reading relieves the right side.

Not sure about your setup? The desk setup check shows what to change first.

4 exercises for the shoulder blade

  1. Band pull-apart – 2 × 15, shoulders low.
  2. External rotation with band – elbow at your side, forearm turns outwards against a light band. 2 × 12 per side.
  3. Wall slides – back and forearms against the wall, slide up slowly without arching the back. 2 × 10.
  4. Doorway chest stretch – forearm on the door frame, step forward gently. 2 × 30 seconds per side.

Do them once a day or as a desk break – 5 minutes is enough. More: rounded shoulders, mouse arm and elbow pain, why neck and shoulders are one problem.

When to get it checked

  • Pain when lifting the arm above shoulder height that gets worse over weeks
  • Night pain when lying on the shoulder
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in the arm or hand
  • Pain after a fall, or no improvement after 2–3 weeks
