Medicine balls in different sizes for choosing the right weight

Which Medicine Ball Weight Should You Buy? A Simple Guide

Most people buy a medicine ball that is too heavy. For core and rotation work, control matters far more than weight – a ball you can move cleanly for 10 reps beats one that turns every rep into a lower-back exercise.

The quick answer

You are… Core & rotation Squats, lunges, carries
New to training 3–4 kg 4–5 kg
Training regularly 4–6 kg 6–7 kg
Strong and experienced 6–7 kg 10–12.5 kg

If you only buy one ball: 5 kg covers most exercises for most people.

How to test it

  • 10 Russian twists with a straight back and calm breathing? Good weight.
  • Your lower back rounds or you hold your breath? Too heavy.
  • 10 goblet squats feel easy after the second set? You can go heavier for leg work later.

Medicine ball or slam ball?

A classic medicine ball (faux leather, stable filling) is made for holding, rotating, squatting and passing to a partner. A slam ball has a thick rubber shell and is built to be thrown hard onto the floor. If you train in a flat with neighbours below, a medicine ball is the better choice anyway.

What to look for

  • grippy surface – smooth balls slip with sweaty hands
  • weight printed on the ball
  • shape-stable filling that does not shift
