High-Protein Smoothies Without Protein Powder: 5 Recipes With 25 g+
Share
You don't need a scoop. You need the right base.
Protein powder is convenient, but it is not required. Dairy and soy bases bring plenty of protein on their own, and they make a thicker, more filling smoothie. Each recipe below reaches roughly 25 g or more without any powder.

The protein bases
| Base | Protein (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Low-fat quark | around 12 g per 100 g |
| Skyr | around 10–11 g per 100 g |
| Milk (dairy) | around 3.4 g per 100 ml |
| Soy milk | around 3 g per 100 ml |
| Peanut butter | around 4 g per tablespoon |
| Oats | around 4 g per 30 g |
Brands vary, so check the label. Quark and skyr do the heavy lifting; milk, nut butter and oats top it up.
1. Berry skyr smoothie

200 g skyr, 200 ml milk, a handful of frozen berries, a little honey. Roughly 28 g protein.
2. Peanut butter banana

150 g quark, 250 ml milk, one banana, one tablespoon of peanut butter. Tastes like a milkshake. Roughly 31 g protein.
3. Chocolate oat breakfast smoothie

150 g quark, 250 ml milk, 30 g oats, a teaspoon of cocoa, half a banana. A full breakfast in a glass. Roughly 31 g protein.
4. Green smoothie that isn't sad

200 g skyr, 200 ml milk, a handful of spinach, half a frozen banana and a few chunks of frozen mango. The fruit hides the spinach completely. Roughly 29 g protein.
5. Dairy-free version

350 ml soy milk, 200 g firm silken tofu, frozen berries, one tablespoon of peanut butter. Roughly 25 g protein, fully plant-based. Check the tofu label: silken tofu varies a lot in protein.
Making it filling
- Use frozen fruit instead of ice for a thick texture.
- Add oats or nut butter if it has to replace a meal, not just a snack.
- Drink it slowly, or eat it from a bowl with a spoon. Liquid calories register less with your appetite than food you chew.
When to drink it
Whenever it fits: breakfast, after training or as an afternoon snack. Total protein across the day matters far more than timing, as explained in does protein timing actually matter? The short version
Quark or skyr plus milk gets you most of the way, fruit gives flavour, and oats or nut butter make it a meal. Five minutes, no powder, 25 g+ protein.
