High-Protein Slow Cooker Recipes: 6 Set-and-Forget Meals for Busy Weeks
Share
After a long day at the desk, cooking is the last thing you want to do – and that is exactly when protein goes missing. A slow cooker fixes that: ten minutes of prep in the morning, and dinner plus two or three lunches are ready when you get home.

- Lean protein: chicken thighs or breast, lean beef, turkey mince, pork loin, or lentils and beans
- Liquid: stock, chopped tomatoes or light coconut milk – enough to come about halfway up
- Vegetables: onions, carrots, peppers, sweet potato – hard veg at the bottom
- Flavour: garlic, spices, herbs, a splash of soy sauce or vinegar at the end
Low for 6–8 hours or high for 3–4 hours works for most recipes. Serve with rice, potatoes or bread and you have a complete meal.

Turning one pot into three meals
- Dinner: straight from the pot with rice or potatoes.
- Lunch 1: shredded salsa chicken or pulled pork in a wrap – see high-protein wraps.
- Lunch 2: over rice and greens as a bowl – see high-protein rice bowls.
If your office has no microwave, chilli and dal also work in a pre-heated food flask. More ideas: high-protein lunch for work without a microwave.
Food safety basics
- Thaw meat fully before it goes in – do not start with frozen chunks.
- Do not lift the lid often; every peek costs heat and time.
- Cool leftovers quickly, refrigerate within about two hours and eat within 3–4 days, or freeze in portions.
- Dried kidney beans must be soaked and boiled hard for at least 10 minutes before slow cooking – or simply use canned beans.
How much protein per portion do you need?
Most people who train do well with roughly 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day, spread over 3–4 meals. The free Protein Calculator gives you your daily target and grams per meal in 30 seconds. If you are also trying to lose fat, the Macro Calculator adds calories, and high-protein low-calorie meals shows how to build the plate.
Common questions
Can I put raw chicken straight into the slow cooker?
Yes, fully thawed raw chicken is fine – it cooks through over the long cooking time. Check that it is cooked all the way through before serving.
Is lean meat too dry in a slow cooker?
Breast meat can dry out on long cooks. Chicken thighs, stewing beef and pork loin with enough liquid stay juicy. For breast, use the high setting for a shorter time.
Does slow cooking destroy protein?
No. The amount of protein stays essentially the same; it simply becomes more tender.
The short version
Lean protein, liquid, vegetables and spices in the pot in the morning – dinner and two lunches with roughly 35–45 g protein each when you get home. The easiest way to keep protein high in busy weeks.
