High-Protein Overnight Oats: 6 Recipes for Muscle Gain
Share
Overnight oats solve a specific problem: mornings where you do not have time to cook but still want a breakfast that actually contains enough protein. You prepare them the night before, and they are ready the moment you wake up.
These six recipes are built around a similar base but push the protein higher than a typical overnight oats recipe, usually into the 25 to 35 g range per serving.
The Base Method
All six recipes start the same way:
- Combine rolled oats with a liquid (milk, a milk alternative, or a mix with yogurt) in roughly a 1:1 ratio
- Add your protein source and mix-ins
- Stir well, cover, and refrigerate for at least six hours or overnight
- Adjust the texture with a splash of extra liquid before eating if needed

1. Greek Yogurt and Berry Oats
Oats, Greek yogurt, milk, chia seeds and mixed berries. The Greek yogurt does most of the protein work here while keeping the texture creamy.
2. Protein Powder and Peanut Butter Oats
Oats, milk, a scoop of protein powder and a spoon of peanut butter. Whisk the protein powder into the milk first to avoid clumping before adding the oats.
3. Cottage Cheese and Banana Oats
Blend cottage cheese with milk until smooth, then combine with oats, sliced banana and cinnamon. Blending removes the texture of the cottage cheese while keeping its protein content.
4. Chocolate Skyr Oats
Skyr or quark, milk, cocoa powder and a small amount of honey or sweetener. Tastes closer to dessert than most items on this list, which helps on days when motivation for a healthy breakfast is low.
5. Chia and Almond Protein Oats
Oats, milk, extra chia seeds, almond butter and sliced almonds. Higher in fat than the others, which makes it more filling for a similar volume.
6. Vanilla Protein Powder and Mixed Nut Oats
Vanilla protein powder, milk, oats and a mix of walnuts, almonds and pumpkin seeds. A good default recipe once you have the base method down and want to build your own variations.
Adjusting for Your Goal
For muscle gain, add extra oats, a banana, or a spoon of nut butter to increase the calories. If you are prioritizing fat loss, keep portions moderate and lean more on Greek yogurt or cottage cheese versions, which carry more protein per calorie. See our guide on high-protein breakfast for fat loss for more on that approach.
