High-Protein Desserts: 6 Sweet Snacks That Actually Help You Hit Your Target
Share
The easiest protein of the day is often the sweet one.
Most people fall short on protein in the evening, which is exactly when they want something sweet. Dairy bases like Greek yogurt, skyr, quark and cottage cheese turn that craving into a useful part of the day. None of the six ideas below needs baking skills, and protein powder is optional in all of them.

The bases that do the work
| Base | Protein per 100 g (approx.) | Texture |
|---|---|---|
| Low-fat quark | around 12 g | Thick and creamy, great for mousse and cheesecake-style cups |
| Skyr | around 10–11 g | Thick, slightly tangy |
| Cottage cheese | around 11–12 g | Lumpy as it is, smooth once blended |
| Greek-style yogurt (0–2 %) | around 8–10 g | Creamy, good for freezing |
Values vary by brand, so check the label. A 250 g portion of any of these lands roughly between 20 and 30 g of protein before you add anything.
1. Chocolate quark mousse

Whisk 250 g low-fat quark with a heaped teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa, a splash of milk and sweetener or a little honey to taste. Chill for 15 minutes. Roughly 30 g protein. It tastes far richer than it is.
2. Cheesecake cup

Crumble one or two digestive or oat biscuits into a glass. Blend 200 g cottage cheese with vanilla and a little sweetener until smooth, spoon it over, and top with berries. Roughly 23–25 g protein.
3. Frozen yogurt bark

Spread 300 g Greek yogurt thinly on baking paper, scatter berries and a few dark chocolate chips over it and freeze for two hours. Break into pieces and keep them in the freezer. Roughly 25–30 g protein for the whole tray. Good when you want something to nibble rather than one bowl.
4. Skyr berry crunch

A bowl of skyr with frozen berries, which thaw into a sauce, and a spoon of granola or chopped nuts on top. Roughly 20–25 g protein for 200 g skyr. Takes one minute.
5. Peanut butter banana "ice cream"

Blend one frozen banana with 150 g quark and a teaspoon of peanut butter until it looks like soft serve. Eat straight away. Roughly 22 g protein.
6. Microwave mug cake

Mix one egg, three tablespoons of oats, a tablespoon of cocoa, a little baking powder, sweetener and a splash of milk in a mug. Microwave for 60–90 seconds. Add a scoop of protein powder if you have one, or serve it with a spoon of quark on top. Roughly 12 g protein without powder, 30 g or more with it.
Does dessert protein "count"?
Yes. What matters most for muscle is your total protein across the day, not whether it came at dinner or after it. Does protein timing actually matter? covers the evidence, and how much protein you need gives the target to aim for.
If you are eating to lose fat, these swaps help in a second way: a sweet bowl that is mostly protein keeps you full far better than a typical dessert. More on that in working out your calorie deficit.
The short version
Pick a dairy base, add something sweet and something crunchy, and you have 20–30 g of protein in a few minutes. Keep a tub of quark or skyr in the fridge and the evening craving starts working for you. For savoury ideas, see the high-protein snacks list.
